A concerned mother from Cambuslang, Deborah Dyer, found herself in a predicament after being fined for driving through a bus gate in Glasgow city centre while rushing to pick up her daughter. Dyer, residing in Gilbertfield Wynd, has raised questions about the necessity of having 24-hour bus gates in the city centre when there are limited services operating during the night. Her concerns for her daughter’s safety were heightened following recent reports of sexual assaults in the area.
Dyer shared her experience of driving through a bus gate on Argyle Street to collect her daughter in the early hours of the morning, only to receive a £100 penalty for violating the 24-hour restriction. She was surprised to learn that she could have used the bus lane on Jamaica Street, which does not have 24-hour restrictions. Dyer, a mother of three young adult daughters, emphasized the importance of ensuring their safety, especially during late-night outings in Glasgow city centre.
Expressing her frustration with the fine and the appeal process, Dyer criticised the lack of clarity on where 24-hour bus lane rules apply and raised concerns about the emphasis on issuing fines rather than prioritising public safety. She suggested the council should reconsider relaxing bus lane rules at night and consider establishing safe pick-up zones for those who cannot afford taxis.
Dyer also shared a troubling experience her daughter had with a private hire taxi driver, highlighting the need for greater vigilance in ensuring the safety of young people using public transportation. In response to the incident, a Glasgow City Council spokesperson emphasised the importance of adhering to road regulations at all times and reporting any instances of illegal taxi services to the police.
In her plea for a reevaluation of bus lane regulations and a stronger focus on public safety, Dyer urged authorities to place the well-being of residents above financial gains from fines.
