A lorry driver in Scotland has been handed a three and a half year jail sentence for using dating apps to target single mothers and sexually abuse their children. Paul Stewart, the perpetrator, developed relationships with these women online to gain access to their children for his vile acts. He would abuse and take photos of the children, then share these images with a network of paedophiles. Sheriff Alistair Carmichael, who presided over the case at Dundee Sheriff Court, sentenced Stewart to jail and a lifetime registration on the Sex Offenders Register. Additionally, Stewart was issued a ten-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order, restricting his internet use and prohibiting him from being alone with anyone under 18.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Stewart had targeted women with young children on dating websites, earning their trust to be left alone with the victims. The disturbing acts included assaulting a toddler, taking indecent images of an 11-month-old baby, and sexually abusing a young girl during a sleepover. Despite being previously banned from contact with under-16s, Stewart managed to convince another mother to let him babysit her children, thus continuing his criminal behaviour. Witnesses described Stewart as “great with kids and confident,” further highlighting the chilling nature of his crimes.
Stewart, from Wick, admitted to a total of nine charges related to offences committed in Arbroath and Wick spanning from October 2020 to May 2024. Fiscal depute Sarah Wilkinson detailed how Stewart, an HGV driver, engaged with women with children to fulfill his nefarious intentions. The court heard disturbing testimonies of his actions, which included photographing a sleeping child’s genitals and sharing explicit videos with other predators.
While Stewart expressed remorse for his actions through his defence, the court recognised the severe and lasting harm he inflicted. The victim impact statements outlined the devastating consequences of his crimes. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking online and the need for vigilance in safeguarding children from such predators.
