Disturbing ‘Paedo Island’ Off UK Coast Reveals Grim History
A peaceful island off the coast of the UK has garnered a distressing nickname, ‘paedophile island’, due to its somber past. Caldey Island, located less than a mile off the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales, is owned by the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance, monks who took residence on the island after it was acquired by the Order in 1925.
A recent report commissioned by Caldey Abbey and made public on December 10 has exposed a harrowing revelation – between 1960 and 1992, a minimum of 54 children fell victim to abuse by both monks and laymen on the island. Shockingly, some of the perpetrators had hidden their criminal backgrounds and were living under aliases on the island.
Most of the abused children were visitors to Caldey Island, either on family vacations or trips organized by youth groups and schools. Sixteen survivors came forward to provide testimonies for the damning 73-page report. The report primarily highlights the actions of Father Thaddeus Kotik, who committed abuses against several children in the late 1960s, evading justice until his death in 1992.
Former assistant police and crime commissioner Jan Pickles OBE, who led the investigation, revealed that Kotik had deceived authorities by fabricating his military history to gain British citizenship. Kotik employed intricate methods to manipulate and abuse children, such as using pets to lure their interest and gaining parents’ trust before offering to babysit. Described as “creepy” and “childlike” by a witness, Kotik’s grooming tactics went unnoticed in plain sight.
The report shed light on how allegations of abuse had been raised multiple times over the years, yet were disregarded and not reported to the authorities. In a chilling incident in the 21st century, a fugitive named Paul Ashton was apprehended on Caldey Island in 2011 after being recognized from a ‘Most Wanted’ list. Ashton, operating under a false identity, was found to have used the Abbey’s IT systems to access indecent images of children.
The report, initiated by Father Jan Rossey, the newly-appointed Abbot of Caldey Abbey, resulted in 12 recommendations that he assured would be fully implemented. Some measures, such as safeguarding training and mandatory background checks for island residents, were already in effect.
In a statement, Abbot Rossey expressed profound regret and offered heartfelt apologies to the victims for their suffering and the lack of acknowledgment of their pain. The disturbing history of Caldey Island serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and safeguarding within communities to protect the vulnerable.
