Kind-hearted shoppers from Dumfries and Galloway’s Tesco stores have generously donated over 4,000 meals to support those in need during the festive season. The local community responded enthusiastically to the supermarket giant’s charity winter food collection initiative.
Across the UK, nearly two million meals’ worth of long-life food items were donated to charities such as FareShare and Trussell, with 4,244 meals contributed in Dumfries and Galloway alone. Tesco CEO Ken Murphy expressed gratitude to all the donors, highlighting the significant impact their generosity has on communities supported by Trussell and FareShare.
Items donated to Trussell are utilised by food banks to provide emergency food parcels to individuals facing financial difficulties, while FareShare donations are distributed to frontline charities nationwide. Additionally, Tesco supports FareShare through its community food connection scheme by donating surplus food. The winter food collection also resulted in over £340,000 in donations from UK customers who rounded up their bills at the checkout.
FareShare CEO Kristopher Gibbon-Walsh commended the ongoing support from Tesco customers, emphasizing the crucial role their contributions play in ensuring food reaches those in need. Tesco shoppers are encouraged to continue donating food at permanent collection points situated in every Tesco store, including locations in Dumfries, Annan, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, Lockerbie, and Stranraer.
Trussell CEO Emma Revie expressed gratitude towards Tesco for organizing the winter food collection, acknowledging the collective effort in supporting local food banks to assist individuals facing hunger and hardship. With the contributions received, over 1.8 million meals have been gathered to support those requiring food bank assistance during the winter months.
