Pitlochry Hotel Rescues Town Foodbank’s Christmas Lunch
Staff at a Pitlochry hotel have come to the rescue of the town’s food bank by ensuring the continuation of its annual Christmas Day lunch. The Atholl Centre food bank, which serves over 100 people who might otherwise go without, was facing a shortage of volunteers due to financial difficulties. To prevent the important event from being cancelled, employees from McKays Hotel Bar and Restaurant have volunteered to prepare and serve the traditional three-course meal at the Atholl Centre, as well as assist with Christmas Eve deliveries.
For the past four years, McKays Hotel Bar and Restaurant, along with its suppliers, have been providing hundreds of free Christmas Day meals for the food bank and its home delivery programme. Upon learning of the food bank’s staffing challenges, McKays Hotel stepped up and offered to provide their own staff to ensure the event’s success. Around 150 meals will be prepared and served in total, with employees also lending a hand with the essential home delivery service.
Alec Summers, the general manager at McKays, expressed the hotel’s willingness to help, highlighting the importance of community support during the festive season. Head chef Richard Kirby, who was part of last year’s team effort to cook 120 festive meals, is gearing up for an even larger operation this year, with an estimated 150 meals to be served. In addition to the Christmas Day effort, McKays is donating its December charity quiz proceeds to the food bank and sourcing dry and canned goods to replenish the shelves in the New Year.
