A prison officer has been sentenced to 15 months in jail after being caught on video engaging in a sexual act with an inmate while on duty. The officer, Linda De Sousa Abreu, 30, was charged last year after the footage was shared on social media. The incident took place at HMP Wandsworth in south London. Abreu appeared at Isleworth Crown Court, where she pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office.
In the video that went viral on social media, the prison officer can be seen in uniform, first engaging in a sex act with the inmate and then having intercourse with him while being filmed by his cellmate. The footage also showed piles of the prisoner’s clothes on a bunk bed, while colleagues’ voices could be heard on the officer’s radio left on a side table. Abreu was arrested at Heathrow Airport as she was about to board a flight to Madrid. She holds a Portuguese passport and had no relevant previous convictions.
During the sentencing hearing, Abreu’s defence claimed she acted under duress and out of fear for her safety. However, the prosecution argued that her actions were deliberate and intentional, undermining the trust of both prisoners and staff at the prison.
