A man has been sentenced to 20 months in jail for setting a car on fire outside a tower block in Motherwell. Anthony O’Rourke, 27, used petrol in a beer bottle to ignite the vehicle in a car park outside Netherwood Tower on September 12, 2023. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, leaving the female owner of the Vauxhall Astra puzzled as to why her car was targeted.
Firefighters responded to the incident around 11 pm and managed to extinguish the blaze. Prosecutors described finding a smashed front passenger window on the car, along with a beer bottle containing a burnt blue rag in the driver’s footwell emitting a strong smell of petrol. CCTV footage captured a suspect approaching the car with a bottle, followed by a large flame and the suspect fleeing the scene.
Forensic analysis of the bottle revealed a mixture of beer and petrol, with O’Rourke’s DNA found on it. When questioned by the police, O’Rourke declined to provide any information regarding the incident. The car owner’s insurance deemed the vehicle a write-off with a value of £4,000, leaving her £1,000 out of pocket due to the insurance excess and associated costs.
O’Rourke, a father of one with a history of drug and alcohol abuse, expressed remorse through his solicitor, citing personal tragedies as contributing factors to his actions. Despite this, Sheriff Colin Dunipace emphasised the severity of the crime, highlighting the danger posed to residents when vehicles are deliberately set on fire in close proximity to homes.
