Parcels of joy for 400 families in Dumfries and Galloway have been distributed by the new charity, Us2U, providing a lifeline for those in need in the region. An overwhelming community response saw over £10,000 worth of food or cash donations, enabling volunteers in Dumfries to prepare packages for families. Each family received a supply to create a two-course Christmas dinner for six people, along with breakfast items, extra meals, a cupboard filler bag, and treats like chocolate and biscuits.
Formerly known as the Christmas Gesture, Lee Vann-Wakelin from Dumfries initiated this annual festive appeal to assist those facing challenges. The increasing support prompted the establishment of the charity, Us2U, with Lee as chairperson and Stuart Rae as vice chairperson, enhancing their capacity to expand the initiative regionally, benefitting 400 families. All donations, whether financial or in food form, directly contributed towards the hampers distributed.
A team of volunteers, alongside Lee and Us2U members, gathered at Troqueer Church Hall to pack and distribute the provisions. The significant collaboration of businesses, community groups, and individuals across Dumfries and Galloway showcased a remarkable unity in supporting this cause. Through collective efforts, schools, agencies, and community centres received essential supplies to assist families in need throughout the region.
Looking ahead to Christmas 2025, Us2U has set a target of providing 500 hampers, reflecting the ongoing demand for aid within the community. The commitment and generosity displayed by various groups and individuals highlight the profound impact of community solidarity in alleviating food insecurity and supporting vulnerable families during the festive season.
