Hamilton bus passengers queue to welcome return of X1 service

Bus passengers in Hamilton eagerly lined up to welcome back the X1 service connecting the town with Glasgow after nearly five years of absence. The new JMB Travel service, known as X1 Glasgow Fast, now offers 11 return journeys on weekdays and 10 on Saturdays, providing a direct link between Hillhouse, Earnock, Fairhill, and Hamilton town centre to Glasgow.

Passengers eagerly attended information roadshows aboard the newly branded vehicles to meet with drivers, gather information on fares and timings, and show their support for the reinstated service. The reintroduction of the X1 service came after years of campaigning by residents who felt disconnected from essential transportation routes.

The community’s enthusiasm was evident as a busload of Earnock residents celebrated the return of the service at Davington Drive, where a demonstration two years prior had expressed the need for the vital service. Commuters, students, and retirees were among those keen on rejoining the service, which ceased in July 2020 due to low passenger numbers and subsequent driver shortages.

JMB Travel’s managing director, Martin Bell, expressed astonishment at the overwhelming public support received for the reintroduction of the X1 service. The company spokesperson highlighted the success of the roadshows, indicating a strong community demand for the service and praised the dedication of local campaigners and elected representatives.

The X1 Glasgow Fast service now offers multiple daily journeys, starting as early as 6.38 am and running until the evening, providing improved connectivity between Hamilton and Glasgow. Residents can benefit from new journey options and affordable fares for short-hop journeys within Hamilton and direct trips to Glasgow city centre.

The re-introduction of the X1 service has garnered widespread excitement, with residents, including politicians like Monica Lennon MSP, lauding the positive impact of the service on locals. Lennon’s motion at the Scottish Parliament commends the efforts of local residents and community groups in advocating for the service’s return, emphasizing the service’s significance in fostering better connectivity and encouraging regular use.

The X1 service’s return signifies a significant milestone for the communities in and around Hamilton, providing them with enhanced transport options and re-establishing crucial connections between various areas. Residents have enthusiastically welcomed the reintroduction of the service, underscoring the vital role it plays in facilitating convenient and accessible travel for all.
