Residents urged to take up flu jag to ease winter pressures on struggling NHS Forth Valley

Residents in Forth Valley are being called upon to receive their flu vaccinations in an effort to alleviate pressure on the struggling NHS Forth Valley. Clackmannanshire & Dunblane MSP Keith Brown is urging all eligible individuals to get their flu jabs to protect themselves against the winter illnesses. The call to action comes following reports from NHS Forth Valley indicating a significant increase in respiratory illnesses, with one-in-six core patient beds occupied by patients with such conditions.

NHS Forth Valley disclosed that 83 patients are currently being treated for flu, Covid, and respiratory viruses at Forth Valley Royal Hospital, representing a sharp rise compared to previous weeks. To mitigate the spread of respiratory illnesses within the hospital premises, the health board has advised visitors to wear face coverings and for anyone displaying symptoms to refrain from visiting. As 58.4% of eligible adults have already been vaccinated, Mr. Brown is encouraging constituents to schedule their appointments by the March 31 deadline to ensure protection throughout the winter.

Highlighting the importance of vaccinations, Mr. Brown emphasised that getting vaccinated provides the best defence against flu viruses circulating during the winter season. He commended NHS Forth Valley for surpassing the national average in vaccination uptake but stressed that there are still many eligible individuals who have not received their boosters. Vaccinations not only reduce the risk of hospitalisation due to severe illness but also contribute to preventing the spread of flu within the community.

NHS Forth Valley’s Director of Acute Services, Garry Fraser, acknowledged the challenges posed by isolating patients with respiratory illnesses and the strain on hospital capacity. He underscored the seriousness of flu, particularly for vulnerable groups, and urged eligible individuals to get vaccinated. Fraser also called on employers to support efforts in reducing transmission by facilitating remote work where feasible. In case of minor injuries or urgent health concerns outside regular hours, individuals are advised to contact NHS 24 or utilise the resources available on the NHS Forth Valley website for health information and clinic details.

In conclusion, the proactive campaign for flu vaccinations in Forth Valley serves as a crucial strategy to safeguard public health and alleviate pressures on healthcare services during the challenging winter period. By mobilising the community to take preventive measures, such as vaccinations and observing hygiene protocols, the region can work towards a healthier and more resilient population amidst the ongoing healthcare challenges.
