‘Fit and healthy’ one-year-old dies suddenly after swallowing 10p coin

Little Hayden David Lewis Matthews, a “fit and healthy” baby boy, tragically passed away after swallowing a 10p coin, an inquest has revealed. At just 14 months old, Hayden died suddenly after being rushed to the hospital. The toddler lived between Truro and Redruth with his parents, Kirsty Davies and David Matthews, who were separated. Hayden was under his father’s care at the time of his death in 2023, having been with him for about six weeks leading up to the tragic incident.

According to reports, Hayden fell quiet during a car ride, prompting concern. Upon arrival at the hospital, a nurse noticed the baby appearing unwell in his car seat, leading to immediate medical attention. Despite efforts by emergency staff, Hayden sadly passed away later that evening at Royal Cornwall Hospital. A post-mortem conducted by a forensic pathologist revealed no underlying physical or psychological issues that could explain his sudden death, but an examination uncovered a 10p coin lodged in his oesophagus. The discoloured coin suggested it had been stuck there for some time.

Following an investigation by the police, no suspicious circumstances were found surrounding Hayden’s death. Senior coroner for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Andre Cox, concluded that Hayden’s passing was due to an unascertained cause and recorded an open conclusion. Despite the suspicion towards the coin as a factor in his death, there was a lack of evidence of perforation or infection that would typically be present in such cases.

In conclusion, the heartbreaking loss of Hayden serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the importance of vigilance in child safety. Parents are urged to maintain a watchful eye over their little ones to prevent accidents like this from occurring. The incident highlights the need for awareness and caution, especially when it comes to small objects that could pose a danger to young children.

By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, caregivers can help ensure the safety and well-being of the precious little ones in their care. The memory of Hayden serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing each moment with our loved ones.
