Mum left lying on a trolley for nearly 50 hours at Wishaw A&E department

**Mother Left Waiting for Nearly 50 Hours in Lanarkshire A&E Department**

A distressing incident at the Wishaw A&E department left a mother, Lynn Nelson, lying on a trolley for almost 50 hours before receiving treatment. Lynn, a mother of two, was battling flu, pneumonia, and a collapsed lung and described feeling like she was on the brink of death during the ordeal at University Hospital Wishaw. Despite seeking medical attention on advice from a nurse at her GP surgery in Carluke, Lynn faced a harrowing experience at the A&E.

Her husband, Richard, expressed their disappointment in the NHS system, highlighting the lack of prompt medical attention and the challenging conditions at the hospital, with patients left waiting on chairs or trolleys for extended periods. The ‘corridor care’ report by the Royal College of Nursing shed light on the concerning norm of patients enduring uncomfortable and inappropriate settings due to delays in receiving care.

After enduring over two days of waiting, Lynn was eventually diagnosed with a partially collapsed lung, further adding to the distress of the situation. The challenging circumstances at the hospital were exacerbated by high levels of flu cases and icy conditions, putting additional strain on healthcare services.

Despite the apology issued by NHS Lanarkshire for the delays and the subsequent investigation into the case, the incident underscores the need for improved healthcare management and timely interventions to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The Nelson family’s experience serves as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of efficient and compassionate healthcare services, especially during times of increased strain on the system.

In light of Lynn’s discharge just before Christmas and her ongoing recovery at home, the family’s decision to file a complaint with NHS Lanarkshire emphasises the need for accountability and improvements in patient care standards to prevent such distressing situations from reoccurring. As the healthcare system grapples with challenges, it is imperative to prioritise patient welfare and ensure timely, quality care for all individuals in need.
