A 16-year-old Scottish footballer tragically passed away after a flu infection he contracted over Christmas led to sepsis. Orla Taylor from Turriff in Aberdeenshire had initially experienced a cough before developing a fever on Christmas Day. Despite being described as fit and healthy, she began vomiting and sought medical attention at the out-of-hours G-doc service at Inverurie Hospital twice between Christmas and New Year.
Orla’s flu infection escalated into a respiratory issue, eventually progressing to sepsis. On New Year’s Day, with her mother Fiona by her side and her father Scott following in a car, Orla was rushed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after an ambulance was called. Even though she was visibly unwell, Orla remained in high spirits when she arrived at the hospital. Unfortunately, doctors determined that she needed to be placed in a medical coma, and by the afternoon of New Year’s Day, Orla had tragically passed away.
Her father Scott expressed the family’s profound grief, emphasising how unexpected and devastating her loss was. Orla, a talented football player and coach for Turriff United youth team, was remembered as a fun-loving and outgoing individual who had a passion for sport. She had recently left school and was looking forward to pursuing a career in the army after completing a uniformed services course.
Turriff United Youth FC paid tribute to Orla’s vibrant spirit and positive impact within the club, highlighting her role as a role model for younger players. Sepsis, a life-threatening condition, occurs when the body’s response to an infection causes damage to tissues and organs. Orla’s Celebration of Life was set to take place on January 27 at Fyvie Parish Church.
