A passenger on a train from London to Edinburgh caused chaos at Newcastle Central Station when he unknowingly walked onto the tracks in what has been described as a “sleepwalking” incident. Bailey Netherington, 23, disembarked from the train at Newcastle Central Station on January 4, leading to disruptions in train services as authorities intervened to apprehend him. Netherington, who appeared in court wearing a black tracksuit, coat, and Nike trainers, was arrested after walking along the tracks following the train’s stop.
Prosecutor Gurjot Kaur informed Newcastle Magistrates Court about the incident, stating that staff and police were alerted when Netherington was spotted on the tracks, which were particularly busy with multiple train operations. The court heard that Netherington was taken into custody, where he pleaded guilty to trespassing onto railway property. His defence lawyer, Neil Cassidy, mentioned that Netherington had little recollection of the event and believed he was still on the train, likening his actions to sleepwalking.
Cassidy explained that Netherington had been drinking heavily the night before but had not consumed much on the day of the incident. Despite these circumstances, District Judge Kathryn Meek emphasised the danger Netherington had exposed himself and others to, highlighting the disruption caused at Newcastle station. Netherington was fined £180 plus court costs for his actions.
