Young Mother Secures £1 Million Compensation After Losing Leg in BMW Hit-and-Run Incident
Kerrie Lavery, a young mother, has won a £1 million compensation settlement after tragically losing her leg in a hit-and-run incident involving a BMW. The incident occurred on October 2, 2021, near Clydebank, Dunbartonshire, when Thomas Granger, driving at a speed of 81mph in a 40mph zone, struck Kerrie and her friend, Alanah Boyle, while they were walking home from a charity event. Kerrie’s right leg had to be amputated as a result of the collision, while Alanah suffered a fractured pelvis.
Following the hit-and-run, Granger initially drove away but later returned to the scene, where he was identified as the driver who caused the accident. He was subsequently sentenced to 33 months in prison and a seven-year driving ban for causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene. In September of the previous year, Kerrie initiated legal proceedings at the Court of Session to secure compensation for a lifetime of medical care.
In a statement, Kerrie expressed her desire for the driver to be held accountable, emphasising the impact the incident had on her life. Despite the challenges she faced, Kerrie maintained a positive outlook, believing that life-changing events do not have to be life-ending. She also highlighted the importance of road safety and justice, indicating that the conclusion of the case would send a powerful message to the public.
Chris Stewart, a Partner at Digby Brown Solicitors representing Kerrie, acknowledged the ordeal she had endured and commended her strength and resilience throughout the recovery process. The settlement reached in the civil claim will enable Kerrie to access necessary medical treatment and secure her financial future after the accident impeded her ability to work.
