Woman found dead in her home by pest controllers two years after she was last seen

## Woman’s Body Found Two Years After Disappearance

A tragic discovery was made in Lough, Co Cork, when pest controllers found the skeletal remains of Joyce O’Mahony in her home, where she had not been seen for two years. The grim finding unfolded as Eoin Grant, carrying out pest control, forced entry into what he believed was an abandoned property, only to stumble upon Joyce’s body. The 57-year-old had led a reclusive life, rarely venturing out during the day, according to Cork coroners court.

Joyce’s neighbour, Gerard O’Connor, revealed that Joyce only emerged at night to purchase groceries and had consistently shunned offers of help from her family. Despite numerous attempts by loved ones to assist her, Joyce remained secluded within her home, with her sister even involving the police out of concern. However, Joyce made it clear that she preferred solitude, declining any form of interaction.

Described by her GP, Dr. Claire McCarthy, as “sad and reclusive,” Joyce had a history of mental health issues and had worked in an X-ray department in the UK. Her family expressed their sorrow, recounting how Joyce’s withdrawal escalated after her father’s passing, despite their persistent efforts to reconnect with her. Ultimately, Joyce’s family mourned her passing privately in June 2024, reminiscing about her vibrant personality and interests.

Coroner Philip Comyn concluded that Joyce’s death was not influenced by any external parties, recording an open verdict. Expressing sympathy towards the O’Mahony family, Comyn acknowledged the challenges they faced while Joyce withdrew from social contact, emphasising her preference for seclusion amid a downward spiral worsened by the pandemic.

In light of this tragic incident, it serves as a reminder of the importance of social connections and reaching out to those in need. Despite Joyce’s desire for solitude, the impact of isolation on one’s mental health cannot be overlooked. Staying attuned to the well-being of those around us and offering support can make a significant difference in preventing such heartbreaking outcomes.
