Former London 2012 Olympian Antony James has been found guilty of raping two teenage girls, as reported by The Independent. The 34-year-old former Olympic swimmer and trainee police officer was convicted by a jury at Plymouth Crown Court in Devon. He faced charges including three counts of rape, three of sexual activity with a child, and two counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.
During the trial, it was revealed that James had manipulated and controlled his teenage victims to fulfill his own sexual desires. The jury could not reach a verdict on one count of sexual activity with a child and five counts of rape, and the Crown Prosecution Service has seven days to decide on seeking a retrial for those counts. James had denied the charges but had previously pleaded guilty to six other counts of making indecent photographs of a child.
Gemma Kneebone from the Crown Prosecution Service commended the bravery of the young women who provided evidence in the case. She stated that James had lied about the age of his victims and had taken advantage of them in an appalling manner. The CPS aims to deliver justice for victims of sexual abuse and to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
James had represented Great Britain in the men’s 100 butterfly at the 2012 Olympics in London and had also participated in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, winning silver in the 100 fly and bronze in the 400 medley relay for England. The former Olympian was granted conditional bail by the judge pending his sentencing, which is yet to be scheduled.
