Skygazers in the UK are in for a celestial treat as the “largest and brightest” supermoon of the year is set to grace the night sky on Thursday evening. Astronomers have revealed that this month’s full moon, known as the Hunter’s Moon, marks the third out of four supermoons in 2024. During this event, the Earth’s natural satellite will appear approximately 14% larger and shine about 30% brighter than usual.
The supermoon is expected to be visible shortly after sunset and will gradually increase in its luminosity throughout the night. Daniel Brown, an associate professor in astronomy at Nottingham Trent University, shared insights on this spectacular phenomenon. He mentioned, “The October full moon will be the largest and brightest supermoon of the year, positioned 76km closer to Earth compared to last month’s full moon.”
One fascinating aspect to observe during this event is the potential colour changes that the moon may undergo due to our atmosphere. Additionally, the ‘moon illusion’ phenomenon can be explored, wherein the moon seems much larger when it is closer to the horizon and surrounded by context like buildings and trees. However, when the moon is higher up in the sky without such context, it may appear more distant and smaller.
The term ‘supermoon’ was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, defining it as either a new or full moon occurring when the moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth. Weather forecasters are optimistic about clear skies across the UK for this event, except for some cloudy patches in western Scotland. Jason Kelly, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, mentioned, “The majority of the UK is expected to have clear skies this evening.”
While western Scotland may experience cloudier conditions, it should not entirely obstruct views of the supermoon. Some isolated fog patches are anticipated by midnight, with more extensive low cloud and fog forming in the early hours. This may slightly reduce visibility later in the night but is unlikely to significantly impact the overall viewing experience.
