Eminem to Introduce Obama at Harris Rally in Detroit Following Criticism of Trump
Grammy Award-winning rapper, Eminem, is set to introduce former US President Barack Obama at a presidential campaign rally in Detroit tonight after recent disparaging remarks made by Donald Trump about the city. Eminem has been vocal about his disapproval of Trump for several years, with a history of criticising the Republican nominee.
Although Eminem will not perform at the rally, he is expected to introduce Obama at the get-out-the-vote event for the Democratic presidential candidate, Kamala Harris. The rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, resides in Michigan and has been relatively quiet about the current White House race but has not shied away from expressing his disdain for Trump in the past.
In the lead up to the election, Eminem released an anti-Trump track titled “Campaign Speech,” where he condemned Trump as a “loose cannon.” His outspokenness against Trump caught international attention in 2017 when he delivered a freestyle rap attacking the then-president at the BET Hip Hop Awards.
Despite Eminem’s critical stance against Trump, the rapper expressed surprise that Trump did not retaliate in response to his remarks, reaffirming his strong dislike for the president. This sentiment was echoed during Eminem’s performance at the Reading Festival in the UK, where he led the audience in chanting “f*** Trump.”
Eminem’s upcoming appearance follows pop star Lizzo’s condemnation of Trump’s remarks about Detroit, her hometown. Trump faced backlash after comparing Detroit to a “developing” area, suggesting that the city’s fate could mirror the rest of the country if Harris were to be elected.
In response, Lizzo celebrated Detroit’s cultural contributions and resilience, highlighting the city’s achievements in both the auto and music industries. Her sentiments reflect a growing sentiment of pride and support for Detroit amidst the political discourse leading up to the election.
As the race for the White House intensifies, Harris and Trump are neck-and-neck in the polls, with a particular focus on key swing states like Michigan.
