Swiss glaciers are once again experiencing a period of recession this year, despite a promising start in 2024. According to reports by scientific experts, the volume of Switzerland’s glaciers has decreased, compounding the negative effects of climate change following two challenging years that saw the ice diminish by over 10%.
The Swiss Academy of Sciences’ cryosphere observation team revealed that a combination of high temperatures in July and August, as well as the deposition of reddish-yellow dust from the Sahara Desert onto the glaciers, led to a 2.5% loss in volume this year. This shrinkage occurred despite favourable conditions up until June, with a 30% increase in snowfall compared to average levels in the previous winter providing additional protective covering to the glaciers before rising temperatures took effect.
August witnessed the most significant ice loss ever recorded since measurements began, as stated by the academy. The continued retreat and disintegration of glacier tongues due to climate change were highlighted, with the 2.5% volume loss surpassing the average levels of the past decade. The Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland network, known as GLAMOS, reported that more than half of the monitored glaciers lost their snow coverage entirely over the summer.
GLAMOS attributed the accelerated melting to several factors including exceptionally high air temperatures in July and August, no fresh snowfall during these months, and the impact of southwesterly winds depositing Saharan dust onto the Alps, leading to a warming effect on the ice. Switzerland holds the largest number of glaciers in Europe, with a 4% decrease in total glacier volume observed last year, following a 6% decline in 2022.
