Elderly man heartbroken after being informed wife’s memorial tree to be uprooted
An elderly man has been left devastated after receiving news that a memorial tree he planted in honour of his late wife is set to be removed. John Gibson, 87, decided to pay tribute to his late wife, Alexandra, who passed away in 2022, by planting a tree at the foot of Dumbarton Castle in Pier Park. After 68 years of marriage, John believed that planting the tree, along with a time capsule underneath, would be a fitting and lasting memorial for his beloved wife.
However, John was left shattered when he was informed that the tree was encroaching on land owned by Historic Environment Scotland. His son, David, received a distressing call last month delivering the news. Speaking about the significance of the tree, David shared, “My dad tends to the tree meticulously, surrounding it with my mum’s favourite flowers like snowdrops and daffodils. He even purchased a strimmer to keep the area neat around the tree.”
The land where the memorial trees, including John’s, were planted is categorised as a significant monument, and therefore Historic Environment Scotland has indicated that the trees must either seek monument status or be relocated. While West Dunbartonshire Council has confirmed plans to relocate the trees outside the protected area, John remains baffled by the decision, expressing, “We just celebrated our 71st wedding anniversary. I placed a time capsule underneath the tree with details about my wife, hoping it would be found in the future.”
Historic Environment Scotland explained, “The trees were initially planted within an area safeguarded under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, requiring scheduled monument approval. We have collaborated with West Dunbartonshire Council to identify a new suitable site for the trees within Pier Park but outside the scheduled zone.” West Dunbartonshire Council acknowledged the error, stating, “We regret the erroneous planting of four memorial trees in a protected area of Pier Park. We have applied to plant new trees in a different park location and will proceed once approval is granted by Historic Environment Scotland.”
