Three people have been rushed to the hospital after a black cab collided with pedestrians outside Glasgow Central today. The incident occurred around 1.50 pm on Union Street, at the junction with Gordon Street, prompting a major emergency response in the city centre. Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene just outside Tesco Express on the busy road, with numerous police cars, ambulance crews, and firefighters attending to the situation.
Authorities confirmed that three individuals were taken to the hospital by ambulance, while one person managed to leave the scene on their own. Eyewitnesses were shocked as they saw the cab mount the pavement at a traffic light. Police cordoned off the area, setting up screens around the scene and the black cab at the major junction. Images from the site show the taxi entirely on the pavement as firefighters assess the situation, with a police cordon in place. A green covering surrounds the scene, with blue Police Scotland barriers erected around the crash site.
One witness recounted, “Just witnessed a taxi run two people over at Glasgow Central.” Another observer mentioned, “The emergency services arrived on Union Street quickly and erected screens around the area and the black cab.” A third person commented, “I just walked by a major incident outside Glasgow Central Station. Huge emergency services response. It looks like a taxi mounted the pavement right outside the Tesco Express.”
Authorities are advising the public to avoid the area, with Gordon Street accessible only to pedestrians. A Police Scotland spokesperson reported, “Around 1.50 pm, we attended a report of a crash involving a taxi and three pedestrians on Union Street, at the junction with Gordon Street, in Glasgow City Centre.” Road closures are currently in place on Union Street, Renfield Street, and St Vincent Street, with Gordon Street open for pedestrians only. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to steer clear of the region as investigations continue.
