Thomson Mayor Suspended from Office for Allegedly Providing Alcohol to Jail Inmates
Thomson Mayor, Benjamin Cary Cranford, has been suspended from office by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp after accusations emerged that he provided gin to inmates at the local jail. The 52-year-old mayor was indicted on charges of furnishing prohibited items to inmates and attempting to commit a felony.
The allegations stem from an incident where Cranford was reported to have purchased a 750mL bottle of Seagram’s Extra Dry Gin from a convenience store on June 4. He then allegedly placed the bottle in a ditch along a state highway in Thomson where an inmate work detail from Jefferson County Correctional Institute was operating. The inmates were said to be assisting with general labor supporting the Jefferson County Government.
Following an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation at the request of the Thomson Police Department, Cranford was arrested and booked into the McDuffie County Jail. He later posted a $5,000 bond and was released from custody.
In response to the charges, Cranford denied any wrongdoing in a statement to WRDW, saying, “I’ve done nothing wrong. I don’t know no prisoner in Jefferson County. Didn’t know of no detail that day. That was months and months ago. I don’t even remember that day. Who remembers what they doing every day?”
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed off on Cranford’s suspension from office on Friday, pending the outcome of the legal proceedings. The mayor’s actions have sparked controversy and raised concerns about ethics and accountability in local government. The Independent reached out to Cranford for comment, but he has yet to respond.
