Renowned Indian business magnate Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Sons, has passed away at the age of 86 in a Mumbai hospital. The news of his demise was confirmed by Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran, who expressed profound sorrow at the loss of his “friend, mentor, and guide.”
Tata had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital earlier in the week for age-related medical checkups, and despite his reassurance that there was no cause for concern, his health took a turn for the worse. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Tata, hailing him as a visionary leader and an extraordinary individual who not only provided stable leadership to Tata Sons but also made significant contributions beyond the business realm.
Describing Tata as a compassionate and humble figure, Modi highlighted his philanthropic endeavours that endeared him to many. Industrialist Harsh Goenka referred to Tata as a “titan” in recognition of his immense influence and impact on Indian society.
Throughout his illustrious career, Tata received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Bhushan award in 2000 for his outstanding contributions to the nation. Under his leadership, the Tata Group expanded to encompass nearly 100 companies, spanning industries such as automotive, steel, and information technology, employing over 350,000 individuals worldwide.
Tata’s legacy includes pioneering commercial aviation in India with the launch of an airline that eventually evolved into Air India. His strategic acquisitions, such as Jaguar Land Rover from Ford in 2008, further solidified Tata’s reputation as a trailblazer in the business world.
