The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is set to reveal the recipient or recipients of the Nobel Memorial Prize in economics today, marking the culmination of six days of prestigious awards announcements. This esteemed award, known formally as the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, was established by the central bank as a tribute to Alfred Nobel, the renowned Swedish inventor of dynamite and founder of the Nobel Prizes. The inaugural laureates of this prize were Ragnar Frisch and Jan Tinbergen in 1969.
Last year, the honour was bestowed upon Claudia Goldin, a distinguished professor at Harvard University, recognised for her groundbreaking research shedding light on the disparities in workforce participation and earnings between men and women globally. Goldin’s accolade was particularly notable as she became only the third woman among the 93 laureates in the field of economics.
While some traditionalists emphasise that the economics prize is not technically a Nobel Prize, it is tradition for it to be awarded alongside the original Nobels on December 10th, commemorating Alfred Nobel’s passing in 1896. The announcements for the Nobel laureates in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and peace were made last week.
